When are amend 1040X forms for 2018 available

After you file

If the IRS accepts your return, then you have to wait until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund.  THEN you can prepare an amended tax return 1040X and mail it in. You cannot e-file an amended return.  Meanwhile, DO NOT change anything on your return until you start the amended return.

I was told by the IRS AND the Taypayer Advocate service that this is not true.  You should amend your return even if you have not received your refund yet.

Ok ... from the 1040X instructions on Column A ...  notice the words "it was changed by the IRS" ... you don't know if the IRS will change anything until the original return is fully processed .... if you send in a 1040X before the IRS has finished processing the original return then you could make the problem much worse and it could take months to resolve the issue ... in the years I have been doing taxes and the 50+ years my partners have done taxes we have had to clean up big messes from just this sort of issue ... so do yourself a big favor and wait for the original return to be fully processed and the original refund is in hand before you amend anything.

"Column A. Enter the amounts from your original return.
However, if you previously amended that return or it was
changed by the IRS , enter the adjusted amounts."

It is available now on the IRS website. When will it be on turbotax?

After you file

When the IRS finalizes the electronic 1040X form.  That is not the same as the blank pdf forms on the IRS website.

Obviously the IRS has not finalized the electronic version and they don't know when it'll be ready!

This sucks! 1st TT states Feb 8, then Feb 14, and then Feb 22 and now Feb 28. This blunder is costing me thousands. I will change software next year.

I already came to that conclusion last week when they NO callback me for the second year in a  row.

You all do realize that the amendment form will take 16 weeks or more to process  and the IRS is the hold up due to understaffing issues ... the TT programmers have to wait for the IRS approval of all tax forms before they can be operational.  Dates of availability are always subject to change and this year has been especially challenging.
