Why can't I go back and get more refund for the years I have been filing incorrectly(head of household instead of single) but IRS can go back and charge you for mistakes?

After you file

You can amend your tax returns as far back as 2014 if you discover that you have made mistakes on them.  You mean you filed Single when you think you could have filed as Head of Household?

You are a life saver. I don't know why I have never try researching this. I just thought it was unfair when I found out that I could have been filing as head of household because I provided for a qualifying dependant.

Make sure you send those amended returns in separate envelopes for each year.  It is always a good ides to use a mailing service that will track it like UPS or certified mail so you know the IRS received it.
