I understand that I need to look at prior tax returns to see if I got the American Opportunity or Hope Credit. What if I my parents claimed me on their taxes for 2yrs?
If I did receive the credit, does this apply to my parents or myself (now independent)

After you file
If your parents claimed the American Opportunity Credit on your educational expenses for 2 years, you can either claim the credit for 2 more possible years or until you finish your undergraduate work and start graduate school whichever occurs first.
Each year the credit is claimed, the credit is applied to you even if your parents get the tax benefits.
