I mistakingly claimed my child care expenses, when my ex wife was entitled to that deduction. I need to ammend my return so she can claim that deduction. What can I do?

After you file

Are you the custodial parent?  The custodial parent (where the child lives) is always allowed to claim the child for EIC, Child Care Credit, and Head of Household purposes.  The non-custodial parent cannot claim any of these tax benefits.

If you want to file an amended tax return after IRS accepted your tax return due to a mistake, then you will want to wait until your original tax return is processed by the IRS. If you are receiving a refund, you should wait until the check is issued. Amended returns must be filed by mail.

To amend a 2016 tax return, follow the steps below:

Your ex-wife will need to print, sign, and mail her return this year.
