Unemployment Taxes Withheld

I had elected to have all taxes withheld from my unemployment compensation. But when I filed my 2020 taxes in April I forgot to include my 1099-G form. I already received my 2020 tax return by now.

My question is: do I need to do anything at all like amend my return in order to receive the $1200 the IRS owes me for my taxes withheld from unemployment? Or should I do nothing and just wait for the IRS to eventually deposit the funds?

You will need to amend the 2020 tax return that was filed to add the unemployment compensation and for the exclusion to be applied.

An amended return, Form 1040-X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS if the original tax return was not e-filed. The IRS will take up to 16 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return.

Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS.

Yes, since you did not report the 1099-G on your original return, you will need to amend your tax return and report that information.
