When I did my taxes on February 1st, I look for unemployment that I TXwas paid by TWC There was no amount to list on my taxes. I did get a 1095 with an amount that was paid. When I asked Turbo about it they said the government hadn’t decided what to do

If you filed your tax return on February 1, you really jumped the gun and filed before many tax documents had even been issued, so your return was likely incorrect, especially if you received unemployment in 2020 and did not enter it on your 2020 tax return.  If the return has now been fully processed you need to amend it and add the 1099G for the unemployment.

You will have to enter a 1099G that is issued by your state.

Some states will mail out the 1099G.  Or you might need to go to your state’s unemployment website and use the password, etc. that you have been using to certify for weekly benefits to get your 1099G from the state’s site.

Enter your 1099G in Federal>Wages & Income>Unemployment

Go through the screens very carefully, making sure  to enter any federal/state tax you had withheld from the unemployment.

Even during “normal” times it takes about four months for the IRS to process an amended return.  During the pandemic and due to the severe backlog at the IRS it is taking much longer—six months or more for many amended returns.  Do not expect quick results from amending.  When the IRS issues a refund for an amended return it will be by check.  They do not make direct deposits for refunds for amended returns.  You can watch for information here:

Hello

I understand you received unemployment compensation in 2020.  Your unemployment compensation would be reported to you on a Form 1099G.  If you can't find your Form 1099G, you can find on your unemployment portal you use from the state that is issuing you your unemployment.

First, you'll want to review your return and confirm you included the unemployment compensation on your tax return. It would appear on your 2020 Schedule 1 Line 7.  You should also confirm if any exclusion was taken when you filed.  It would appear on your 2020 Schedule 1 Line 8.

If you included your compensation, but did not include the exclusion, then you do not need to amend, the IRS is automatically adjusting the returns.

The IRS has said that payments will continue "throughout the summer," which means that unless we hear something else, payments could continue through September 22nd.

Here is a link to check the exclusion amount you would be eligible.

If you did not include the unemployment compensation on your tax return, then you would need to amend.
