Does the online version of deluxe cost more than the download version, since the download version includes state, while $39.99 for state w/ the online version?

For one return, it depends on where you buy the desktop version.  You can usually get a better price at Amazon, Staples, Costco, and similar places.  With the desktop program, one state is included but state e-filing is 19.99 extra (unless you decide to print and mail your state return).  They usually end up similar or desktop is slightly less.  But if you need to file more than one return, desktop is much better since you only have to pay that state e-file fee again. Each online account can only file one return and each return you want to file requires a separate account and a separate fee, unless you qualify to file for free.

The desktop version of Deluxe (CD/download) has some additional advantages in its features, too, while Online Deluxe has some limitations as discussed below.

Desktop Deluxe can prepare multiple Federal returns with up to 5 free Federal eiles.  Online editions can only prepare 1 Federal return per account per year.

Desktop Deluxe has the popular Forms Mode for direct viewing/printing/editing of forms during preparation.  Online editions do not have that feature.

Desktop Deluxe can prepare all the usual Federal forms.   Online Deluxe cannot prepare Schedules D, E, F, or a Schedule C with expenses, and it cannot enter a K-1.
