The free version is intended for taxpayers with very simple returns that can fit on the new 1040 form without any schedules. If you do not qualify to use Free File then you will have to upgrade to Deluxe or higher.
To downgrade, you can use the clear and start over feature as long as you didn't submit payment or deduct the TurboTax fee from your refund.
