Get your taxes done using TurboTax

The "tax file" for TurboTax is a proprietary data format made specifically for TurboTax products. The files have the file type of ".tax2019" (or whatever year this file is for). This format cannot be read by most other software, such as Adobe.

Adobe Acrobat handle files in one of many PDF formats (there are many versions of PDF in circulation). Normally, a PDF file will have the file type of ".pdf". However, occasionally file types get lost.

If you open a file using Notepad or a hex editor that you suspect of being a pdf file, the beginning of the file will be "%PDF-1.X" where "X" is a digit indicating the release. For example, the 2018 version of TurboTax created pdf file with "%PDF-1.5".

Once you identify a file as a PDF file, then you can rename the file type to be ",pdf" and then Acrobat will open the file automatically.
