The 1099-G is issued if you received certain payments from federal, state, or local governments. Form 1099-G covers two types of government payments:

  • Unemployment compensation or paid family leave, or
  • Other Types of 1099-G income, including
    • State and local tax refunds
    • Business or farm tax refunds
    • Market gain on Commodity Credit Corporation loans
    • Taxable grants
    • Alternative Trade Adjustment Assistance (ATAA/RTAA) payments

What kind of 1099G do you have?  You might be in the wrong spot.   You do not enter it in the same place as a 1099Misc.

Is it for unemployment?  Federal>Wages and Income>Unemployment

State or Local tax refund?  Federal>Wages and Income>State and Local Tax REfunds on Form 1099G

Government pension, taxable grant, etc?  Federal>Wages and Income>Other 1099G Income
