Probably the 1st step is determining whether you have to file taxes at all. You may not need to file if your income is below the threshold for your filing status. The IRS has a simple tool that will help you determine if you need to file. Answer the interview questions in the IRS link Do I need to file a tax return?
After you determine you need to file a return, gather up your tax documents. W-2's, 1099's, receipts and records for deductions.
Next, decide which TurboTax product you would like to use. There are TurboTax online products and TurboTax CD/download products for your desktop. The links below can help you decide which version will work for your tax situation. Just click on the boxes that apply to you for the tax year, and a product will be recommended for you.
