Do you have a high income? There is a new extra Medicare tax on high earners. The extra Medicare tax shows up on 1040 line 62 and on form 8959 and then it adds the same amount to your federal withholding (from box 2) on line 64 to offset it.

Employers are required to withhold an additional 0.9% of income for Medicare once your wage income exceeds $200,000 for the year. Form 8959 is used to reconcile the additional Medicare tax withheld with the actual additional Medicare tax owed. The additional amount you owe is shown on Line 62 of Form 1040 (along with amounts from Form 8960, for example), and the additional amounts you paid in are included on Line 64 as withholding.

Within the TurboTax program, the Additional Medicare Tax shown on Form 8959 is carried over to the Tax Payments Worksheet (which is not an IRS form), on line 18(f). Form 1040, line 64, pulls the amount of total tax paid, including the Additional Medicare Tax, from the Tax Payments Worksheet, line 19.
