I lived with my mother the entire year, and went to college. My question is can I claim my child and get EITC if I supported myself and her? We split the living costs.

I made over $14,000 gross in 2018, Paid utilites and partial rent, and have my own transportation in my name. I was a student from august-december and I’m just confused on whether I am a qualifying dependent or not. When I file my taxes will I need to bring any type of proof of these things? My mother has already said she will not be claiming my child or myself.

Get your taxes done using TurboTax

You do not need proof to file the return, just need it should IRS ask for it at a later date.

As long as your mother does not claim you, you can claim yourself and your child.

TurboTax will also ask about Head of Household, however you have to had paid over 1/2 of the costs of maintaining the household where you and your child are living.  So you might want to determine how much you paid for the home versus your mother to claim this.
