Wife’s W-4 with dependents

When my wife started her job in Texas education she listed 2 dependents for our 2 children. I already had our kids listed as dependents under mine. We ended up owing money at the end of the year when it came time to enter her taxes after mine.

from what we were told, her initial setup made it seem like we had 4 dependents. She was told to change her dependents to 0 so she would end up owing less at year end.

she did this years ago but still owes a ton of money at the end of the each year.

what else do we need to look at on her forms to make sure we owe less at year end?

thanks

The reason your wife still owes money even with "0 dependents" is likely the "Two-Income Trap."

  • Check the "Box" in Step 2(c)If you or your spouse works multiple jobs and didn't check the box or use the worksheet, you aren't paying enough in. It prevents the system from assuming you only have one income source, which is a common reason people under-pay. For this to work perfectly, you should also check this box on your w4.

  • Make sure Step 3 is $0.00: Ensure the "total" line for Step 3 is completely blank or $0. Only one of you claim the dependents.
  • The "Manual Fix" in Step 4(c)Add a fixed extra amount per paycheck to be withheld. It forces the employer to take out that specific amount of cash every paycheck regardless of any other settings.
