W4's for MFJ with 2 jobs

Hi,

My husband and I each have a job, we file Married Filing Joint. Each year since we've been married we've had to pay in. How should we be filling out our W4s to prevent this?

Also, this year my husband is starting a side gig, construction work. Will this affect how we complete our W4's for our full time jobs?

Thanks,

Ellen Nelson

Yes your side gig will have an impact on how you should fill out your W-4 for your full time jobs.  When you have a side gig you either have to make estimated tax payments quarterly to cover any income from the gig or you can increase your withholding from your full time job instead of making the estimates.

Turbotax has a calculator to help walk you through the process of updating your W-4.  The calculator allows you to add information from additional sources to help you dial in the amount of withholding and test different options.
