Single, Claim 0, Still owed Federal Taxes

I am single and file as such. For the past several years, I owe money to the IRS come tax season even though I only have one employer (full-time) and I claim 0 on my W-4. Why is this? What changes can I make to ensure that I don’t continue to owe each year going forward?

The IRS completely redesigned the W-4 form a few years ago, and allowances (like 'claiming 0') were eliminated. If your employer still has you down as '0' and you are owing taxes, I recommend the following:

    • Option 1: Look at how much you owed on your 2025 taxes. If your income and deductions will be similar in 2026, fill out an updated W-4 and include an extra withholding amount on Line 4(c). Take your total taxes owed from last year and divide that by the number of remaining paychecks this year. For example, if you owed $2,400 when you filed your 2025 taxes and you have 8 paychecks left in 2026, you would enter $300 on Line 4(c).
    • Option 2: You can also use the TurboTax W-4 Calculator to adjust your withholding more precisely.

Whatever you do, make sure to update your W-4 again in January 2027. You’ll want your withholding for the full year of 2027 to be adjusted correctly so you don't, for example, accidentally overpay by keeping that extra $300 from our example taken out for all 12 months.
