Am I filling out my W4 correctly?

For some reason I am not having federal taxes withheld from my paycheck. I complete the W4 as married with 2 dependent children but nothing changes on my paychecks. What do I do?

If your employer isn't taking taxes out, it’s because the form—as filled—tells the system that you don't expect to owe any taxes at all based on your income and credits.

if you are filing married filing jointly, and your spouse also works:

  1. Check the "Box" in Step 2(c): This is the most important part. Since your wife works, you must check the box that says, "Multiple Jobs or Spouse Works". This tells the system to tax you at the correct rate for a two-income household.

  2. Split the Kids (Step 3): If your wife is also claiming the 2 kids on her W-4, you are essentially "double-dipping." Put $0 in Step 3 on your form and let her claim the kids on hers. (Or vice-versa).

  3. The "Safety Net" (Step 4c): If you want to be 100% certain that federal tax is being withheld, use the manual override. Go to Step 4(c) and enter a specific dollar amount (like $50 or $100). The company is then required to take that exact amount out of every check, no matter what.

Summary for your new form:

  • Step 1: Married Filing Jointly- make sure the filing status is right.

  • Step 2: Check the box (Multiple Jobs)

  • Step 3: Put $0 (if your spouse is already claiming the kids)

  • Step 4(c): Put $50 or 100$ (if you want to be 100% sure something is taken out)
