Some possible reasons as to why you may not receive an educational deduction or credit:

  • Educational expenses were covered or exceeded by grants, scholarships (or Savings Bonds, 529, ect)

  • If you have no taxable income, an additional deduction (Tuition and Fees) or nonrefundable credit Lifetime Learning, American opportunity) will not affect tax results

  • You did not claim your son as your dependent

  • Your income was too high to qualify for the deduction or either credit

  • You filed Married Filing Separate
