Question

TurboTax is asking if I was a full-time student, saying a full-time student is someone enrolled for 5 months+. I was enrolled in classes full-time, but only for 16 weeks?

I only spent one semester in school in 2025, since I graduated in the Spring. The school schedule would classify me as full-time for that semester, but I'm not sure if the same applies here since TurboTax says there's a 5-month minimum to be considered full-time.

The 5 months means parts of 5 calendar months. So, depending on when the 16 weeks were it could easily cover 5 calendar months. A common example: being in school from late January to early May would meet the 5 month rule.

The 5 month rule only effects the dependent rules. You did not need to meet it to qualify for a tuition credit.

There are two types of dependents, "Qualifying Children"(QC) and Other ("Qualifying Relative" in IRS parlance even though they don't have to actually be related). There is no income limit for a QC but there is an age limit, student status, a relationship test and residence test.

A child of a taxpayer can still be a “Qualifying Child” (QC) dependent, regardless of his/her income, if:

  1. He is under age 19, or under 24 if a full time student for at least 5 months of the year, or is totally & permanently disabled
  2. He did not provide more than 1/2 his own support. Scholarships are excluded from the support calculation
  3. He lived with the parent (including temporary absences such as away at school) for more than half the year
