On my sons 1098-T why is the amount we paid for tuition in box 1 also listed in box 5 under scholarships and grant? Is this normal?

yes, it would seem that the entire tuition was paid by scholarships. you might have paid out of pocket for housing, books and supplies that aren't reflected in box 1.
