The K-12 credit is a nonrefundable credit. What this means is, the credit is deducted from your IL taxes (tax liability). If you do not pay taxes to IL, there is nothing for the nonrefundable credit to offset.
You may not take a credit for the first $250 and the IL K-12 Education Expense Credit is a maximum total of $500, for all of your eligible kids.
For example, if you paid $3,000 for private education, you would only get a credit for $500.
