Question

My minor dependent is in a court ordered treatment center which I have been paying room and board for. Can I claim those payments?

It depends. Room and board payments to a treatment center are deductible if you itemize deductions on your tax return and all out-of-pocket medical expenses are above 7.5% of your adjusted gross income.

For 2025, the standard deduction is $15,750 (Single/Married Filing Separately), $23,625 (Head of Household), and $31,500 (Married Filing Jointly).

Your total itemized deductions on Schedule A would need to be more than the standard deduction for the medical expenses to be included on your tax return.
