Question

As a PhD student, can I claim out-of-pocket conference travel?

I attended a conference in 2022, but I did not have any funds from the university for flights, hotel, registration, airport cabs. (~$800). I had seen "research travel" somewhere, but I can't quite find it.

No, this is not a deductible expense.  If you were self-employed, it may be a business expense, but there is not really a deduction while you are still a student.
