Are out-of-pocket expenses needed to cover additional costs of an elderly relative residing in an assisted living facility tax deductible?

My elderly mother-in-law resided in an assisted living facility in 2016 but didn't have enough retirement income to completely cover the costs. As such, we paid these additional costs out-of-pocket.  Are any of the expenses paid tax deductible?

It depends on what that amount includes and why an individual is in catered living.  You can include the cost of medical care and nursing care, cost of meals and lodging in the catered living if the primary reason for being there is to get medical care.

If the reason for being is personal, do not include the cost of meals and lodging, just the cost of medical and nursing care.

  1. Federal Taxes
  2. Deductions and Credits
  3. Scroll down to Medical, select Medical Expenses - follow the prompts, enter description and amount in Other Expenses
