TurboTax recommends itemizing deductions when the total of your deductible expenses entered is higher than the standard deduction for your filing status. It automatically compares both options to find the best tax benefit. Even if none of the typical reasons to itemize apply, small deductible expenses like state and local taxes, mortgage interest, or charitable donations might add up to exceed the standard deduction.

You can review your entered expenses in the Deductions & Credits section. If you believe itemizing is not beneficial, you can manually switch to the standard deduction in TurboTax Online by going to the Deductions section and selecting Change my deduction.
