Question

Where do I add expenses for commercial auto insurance?

I have a truck I use in my construction company. I own the truck personally; it is not owned by the business. However, because the truck is almost exclusively used for business, my insurance company insist I have commercial auto insurance instead of regular personal auto insurance. Where should this expense be listed as self employed?

It depends.  If you take the standard mileage deduction, then you do not list the insurance. If you are taking actual expenses, you can add the insurance as an expense in your Schedule C, just remember that if you use the truck for any personal trips, you must prorate the deduction based on your business-use percentage (if you use the truck 90% for construction, you deduct 90% of the premium).

  1. Go to the self-employed section: Navigate to Federal > Wages & Income > Self-employment income and expenses
  2. Edit the business
  3. Choose pencil icon to the right of your vehicle.
  4. Go through the interview, select you want to enter actual expenses, and when you are on the screen Let's get your actual expenses for your vehicle, enter the business portion of the insurance.
