When asked about medical expenses do I need to provide proof of my medical expenses to claim on my return?

Yes, Although the IRS doesn't always ask for documentation, it is your responsibility to maintain records for any deductions you may take.  In the case of lodging, if you don't have the receipt, you can contact the hotel and get a copy.  For mileage you should maintain a log that records Date, Destination, General reason for visit, and Mileage traveled (You can use google maps to get mileages.).

you only need receipts if you are audited by the IRS for reporting large medical expenses.

 

to know what you can deduct, that's usually done with receipts.
