Question

What if I still own my home, but have moved into a new home where I pay rent in addition to my mortgage? Do i get any tax breaks since my original house has not sold?

You can still claim the mortgage interest on your previous primary residence until it sells.  Since you still own it, it is now considered a 'second home' which will allow you to continue to claim the mortgage interest you are paying.  You may also deduct the property tax paid for the home.

You cannot deduct mortgage interest for more than your primary residence and one other property (second home) on Schedule A.
