Should I receive credit for entering my main home mortgage interest paid per 1098? Should the federal tax due change? I've used turbotax over 10 yrs.

Please help. I do not understand why the federal tax due box did not change when I added the Mortgage interest paid?

It is all combined under the Itemized Deduction. If you end up not having more than the increased Standard Deduction then TurboTax will use the Standard Deduction and entering the Mortgage interest won't create any change in the tax due.

Please be aware that due to the tax law changes the Standard Deduction increased quite a bit and it might be that you did not have enough to itemize to be over the Standard Deduction amount. Therefore entering the mortgage interest didn't result in any change. Also, the State, local and property taxes you can include are capped at $10,000.

    Possible itemized deductions are:

    • Medical and dental costs above and beyond 7.5% of your AGI
    • State, local, real estate, and personal property taxes (capped at $10,000)
    • Home mortgage interest
    • Charitable donations and gifts

Please see this FAQ about the Standard Deduction amounts in 2018:

I understand that the State, local, and property tax is capped at $10,000. But how about my main mortgage interest? is this separate deduction?
