Question

purchased and installed battery and EV charger together. No way to separate costs. I put whole thing into home energy credit. What do I do with the EV charger section under Car deductions?

You can not claim the EV charger under "Car Deductions" (Form 8911) if you included its cost in the Residential Clean Energy Credit  section (Form 5695) for the battery. Because you cannot claim the same expense twice. Since they are bundled together, the charger is likely considered part of the home battery energy storage system using Form 5695.

Under the "Cars and Other Things You Own" section (where Form 8911 resides), do not enter the charger expenses.

If you can obtain a receipt showing your charger cost separately, you could move that portion to Form 8911 (up to $1,000 credit). However, if they are legally one unit, leaving it under the Home Energy Credit is the best approach.
