Other Relative Credit

My boyfriend claimed me as a dependent under the Other Relative Credit on his return and I stated on mine that someone could claim me. We didn't realize that if I made over $4200 I do not qualify. Will the IRS verify this or will they just process as is? This is now a big deal for me because if he claims me I won't be eligible for stimulus payment. So just wondering how much effort is put into verifying refunds, especially right now with so much going on.

If the IRS has already processed your original returns, you can continue with the amendment. However, because it must be printed and mailed, it will likely not be processed in time to affect your stimulus payment. This will be reconciled on your 2020 return.

To amend, follow the steps below:

    1. Log into your TurboTax account
    2. Choose the tax year that you wish to amend
    3. Click Amend
    4. Make any necessary changes

Keep in mind that when you are amending, the refund tracker monitors the difference from your original filing to the amended return. It does not include any original refund or balance due. If you are removing any previously claimed credits, you will likely see the difference as an balance due.

He will need to amend his return to undo the claiming for you. You will also need to amend your return to remove the claim. It is not just about getting a stimulus payment, it is about doing your taxes correctly.

I agree that it needs to be amended so that taxes are filed correctly. But since we have both already filed, I'm not sure if now is the best time to amend them since IRS is currently not processing paper applications. So will prbly wait until the IRS is back to normal. Just curious if they verify that tax returns are done correctly . Do you know the answer?
