On the home mortgage interest worksheet it is asking what my beginning principal was. Is this referring to 2018 or when i refinanced or when i purchased the home?

It should be referring to the outstanding mortgage principal as of 1/1/2018.
This is what would be reported on your Form 1098 from your lender.
