Solved

My wife put in the max $5k to her FSA account to pay for my kids' preschool. Why is Turbotax still giving me the $6k child tax credit instead of $1k? We have 3 kids.

Are you confusing child care credit with child tax credit?  Child tax credit gives you $2,000 for each child.

TurboTax will pick up the $5,000 FSA if it is entered in her W-2 box 10 in TurboTax.  TurboTax will then deduct it before calculating the child care credit.   Please go back to her W-2 and make sure that box 10 is entered.

You can go to her W-2, after opening your return,

  1. Click on Pick up where I left off
  2. Click on Wages & Income at the top of the page
  3. This should take you to the Great, let's keep getting the details.
  4. Click Edit/Add next to Job (W-2)
  5. Click on Edit next to her W-2
