My husband and I bought 2 vehicles in 2016. The total adds up to 3837.50 in sales tax paid. When we get to the 2016 sales tax dedution section it shows 6296. Whats wrong

Probably nothing is wrong.  The sales tax you pay for major purchases is added to the sales tax total for your other purchases.

Probably nothing is wrong.  The sales tax you pay for major purchases is added to the sales tax total for your other purchases.
