i upgraded windows in 2023 but did not claim credit for it in 2024. can I go back and claim it on 2025 return?

No, you cannot enter the cost of the windows for an energy credit on the 2025 tax return.  That has to be reported on the 2023 tax return by amending the return.

No.  If the windows were upgraded in 2023, then you can only claim it in 2023.  You can go back and amend your return for 2023 to claim the credit for the windows.  The Home Improvement Energy Efficient Credit for windows is a use it or lose it credit.  This means if you did not have enough tax liability that year, then you lose the credit as it cannot be carried forward.
