Since the 1042-S usually reports scholarship or treaty-exempt income, you will enter it under "Miscellaneous Income."

  1. Go to the Federal tab and select Wages & Income.
  2. Scroll down to the very bottom to Less Common Income.
  3. Select Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C (click Start or Revisit).
  4. Choose Other reportable income at the bottom of that list.
  5. Select Yes when asked if you have any other taxable income.
  6. Description: Enter "1042-S Income" (and mention if it’s a scholarship/fellowship).
  7. Amount: Enter the Gross Income from Box 2 of your 1042-S.

If your 1042-S shows tax withheld in Box 10, you need to claim this so you don't pay the same tax twice.

  1. Go to the Deductions & Credits tab.
  2. Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid.
  3. Select Other Income Taxes (click Start or Revisit).
  4. Look for Withholding not already entered on a W-2 or 1099.
  5. Enter the amount from Box 10 of your 1042-S into the Federal withholding box.
