Did you get a 1099Misc form for something instead of a W2? Or are you just in the wrong version? Did it say you had to upgrade to the Self Employed version to enter something?

If you received a 1099-MISC with income reported in box 3, then as far as the IRS is concerned that is self-employment income.

Income in box 3 is not necessarily self-employment income, it depends on what it was for.

A situation I see a lot with teachers is that they receive a 1099-MISC either for attending training or for union activities. In either of those situations, it IS considered self-employment income and you are self-employed with respect to that particular activity in which you earned money, even though your main work is as a W-2 employee.

If you got the 1099for something else, we would need to know what it was for to help you decide if it is self-employment income or “other” miscellaneous income.

Also, income reported in Box 7 of a 1099-MISC is considered self-employment income and is reported as business income on Schedule C of your tax return. Schedule C also allows you to subtract your allowable business expenses from that self-employment income.

An employee receives a W-2, not a 1099-MISC.
