Question

How do I tell from my 2024 form 5695 if I have an "Energy Efficient Carryforward" for 2025?

On My 2024 tax return, form 5695, I claimed the energy efficient credit for a heat pump I had installed.

Now my 2025 return is asking me if I have a "carryforward" for that.  I don't know how to tell.   The instructions say if I was limited in how much I could claim then I should have a carryover.

At the bottom of 2024's form 5695 Section B, I see the very big cost of my heat pump (over 25,000).  but the instructions for the credit only said "Multiply it by 0.30 but do not enter a number greater than $2,000.  Then below on lines 30 - 32 I'm told to basically pick the smaller of 2 numbers for the credit which ends up being $2,600.

Can anyone tell me how to figure out if I have a carryover?

(Note: I used TurboTax for both returns)

The carryforward for energy credits generally applies to credits where there is not a limitation or a cap for the amount that can be claimed (the one for solar energy property as an example).  Based on your information that the credit you claimed could not be more than $2000 and you had reached that maximum amount on your 2024 tax return, you would not have any carryforward energy credit.

Also, if you used TurboTax to prepare the 2024 return, any carryforward energy credit would automatically be filled in for you.
