How can I check if I took the standard deduction or if I itemized my deductions in 2016? I did my taxes with TurboTax.

You can see if you took the standard deduction by looking at line 40 of your 2016 tax return.  The standard deduction was $6,300 for single filers and $12,600 for married filers.

To access your prior return, go to Previous Taxes at the top of the black column on the left.

If you itemized last year, not only will the amount on line 40 be different, TurboTax will remember and ask a series of questions in the Deductions & Credits section to prompt entering the same deductions this year.

TurboTax gave me a choice of standard deduction or itemization with their recommendation. I filed a schedule A with my taxes which meant I itemized my deductions

Why does TurboTax ask me this question every year? Doesn't it know we did that the previous year???
