Claim American Opportunity Tax Credit

My son is 22 and I am claiming him this year for 2023 taxes as a dependent. He is a full time student. My question is, can I claim the American Opportunity Tax credit on my taxes for him, as he is a dependent?

If you can, how does one go about doing that? I can open a form 8863 but my name always appears on the form or is there a different way to go about this?

You need to enter the qualified education expenses that were paid for his education.  He should have received a Form 1098-T for those expenses which you enter on your tax return since he is being claimed as your dependent.

To enter, edit or delete Education Expenses -

Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
    Click on Deductions and Credits
Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
    Scroll down to Education
On Expenses and Scholarships (Form 1098-T), click on the start or update button

Or enter education expenses in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to education expenses

You, claiming the student as a dependent, enter the 1098-T to claim an education credit.

If, rather than a credit, the entry of the 1098-T results in taxable income, that taxable income is claimed by the dependent student on the student's return.
