Are you a W-2 employee?

Can I deduct job-related expenses on my tax return?

Sorry---W-2 employees cannot deduct job-related expenses on a federal return.  Job-related expenses were eliminated as a federal deduction for W-2 employees by the tax laws that changed for 2018 and beyond.  Your state tax laws might be different in AL, AR, CA, HI, MN, NY or PA.

If you live in a state that lets you deduct job-related expenses, the information will flow from your federal return  to the state return, so enter it in Federal>Deductions and Credits>Employment Expenses>Job-Related Expenses

Do you get a W2 or 1099NEC for work?  Sorry you can not deduct employee job expenses anymore.  Only if you are self employed and fill out Schedule C.

If you are an employee (you get a W-2), you cannot deduct any job-related expenses. The tax reform law that was passed in 2017 eliminated the deduction for job-related expenses for 2018 through 2025.

If you are self-employed (an independent contractor) and you report your income as business income on Schedule C, then you can deduct mileage, tools, and safety equipment as business expenses.

The tag below your question indicates that you are using TurboTax Basic Online. You cannot deduct business expenses in Basic. You would have to upgrade to Premium.
