Can I deduct utilities (electric, water heat, room and board) consumed by international student living in our home?

You may be able to claim a portion of the expenses. Per IRS Pub 526, Charitable Contributions, you may deduct up to $50 per month for each full calendar month the student lives with you as a charitable contribution if you itemize deductions (Schedule A). To qualify for a deduction, the student must:

  • live in your home under a written agreement between you and a qualified organization,
  • not be your relative or dependent, and
  • be a full-time student in grade 12 or lower at a school in the United States.
