Can i deduct the $5,000 used for seminar and travel expenses incurred in pursuit of my PhD?

the university approved these expenditures, gave me the money, and i then paid them. my 1098-T shows $12,785 in box 5 and only $90.69 of expenses in box 1. of the above $12,785 probably $5,000 of which was used to pay these expenses directly related to my pursuit of the Phd. .
