Question

Attic Ventilation 1500 CFM Fan-Home Inflation Reduction Act?

This past fall, I had two attic ventilation fans installed for $1595 with the understanding I would be able to recover $475 in tax credit. When in Turbotax, this doesn't seem to qualify for the tax credit under the Home Inflation Reduction Act. I reached out to the company that sold and installed the fans, and they directed me back to the Inflation Reduction Act. I have tried to figure out how this will work, and it doesn't seem like it will. Was I ripped off?

You may be able to claim a tax credit on a 1500 CFM attic ventilation fan under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) if it is a solar-powered model. This generally qualifies as a residential clean-energy property. Standard, electric-powered attic fans generally do not qualify.

You would report it under solar electric costs. Only the portion of your cost that is for solar electric production is deductible. In general, 30% of the total installed cost, including the solar panel, fan unit, and labor, is considered for the credit.

You can easily get to these TurboTax input screens as follows:

    1. Click on Search in the top right of your TurboTax screen
    2. Type (exactly) 5695, residential energy credit in the search box
    3. Click on the link Jump to 5695, residential energy credit
    4. This will take you to the input screen in TurboTax to enter your information regarding your blinds
    5. Your screen will say Energy Efficient Home Improvements
    6. Answer Yes to Did you make any energy-efficient improvements or have a carryforward from 2024?
    7. Select Continue
    8. Answer  any questions about living arrangements (this must be your primary home to qualify).
    9. Answer Yes to Is the home you made energy-efficient improvements to in the United States? and select Continue
    10. Answer Yes to Did you have any of these residential clean energy costs in 2025?
    11. On the next screen you will be asked Tell us how much you paid for energy-efficient improvements to your home in 2025
    12. Under solar-electric costs, enter the amount that was for solar electric production
