Can employees deduct meals while traveling for business?

Employees are no longer able to deduct out-of-pocket costs for meals in tax years 2018 through 2025 due to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) that Congress signed into law on December 22, 2017.

Prior to the tax rule change, employees could claim 50% of the cost of unreimbursed meals while on business-related travel away from their tax home if the trip required an overnight stay and the cost of the meal wasn’t unnecessarily extravagant. The expense was treated as a 2% miscellaneous itemized deduction.
