Why is there no way to input undergrad/grad tuition when 1098-T is not issued? These boxes are both set to 0 and cannot equal the total tuition paid.

My school does not issue 1098-Ts but we are still expected to report tuition. At no point in the federal filing am I given the option to break down amount for undergrad vs. grad tuition, which triggers an error in Schedule Y because there's a discrepancy (both undergrad/grad tuition are $0, total tuition is non-zero). In the state filing (MA in my case), there's an option to check the box for paying undergraduate tuition, but this gets reset every time I finish going through the state taxes and becomes unchecked. It also doesn't allow me to input any undergrad or grad tuition, so the box does nothing.

I created a return, entered undergrad and grad and sch Y is holding the values with no issue or error. There have been no zero entries. MA pulled over the federal tuition paid to ask for the breakup. The forms show the correct division on both the Sch Y and the Tuition Deduction Worksheet.

 

A full or corrupted cache can cause problems in TurboTax, sometimes you need to clear your cache (that is, remove these temporary files).

Online version:

  1. Delete the form 1098-T, MA Sch Y and MA tuition deduction worksheet-  see How to Delete  
  2. Log out of your return and try one or more of the following:
    • Don't use Internet Explorer.
    • Clear cache and cookies,
    • Sign in using a different browser.
    • Sign in using a different device.
  3. Log back into your return.
    • Enter the information again*

Desktop version: 

  1. Delete the form 1098-T, MA Sch Y and MA  tuition deduction worksheet-
  2. Save your return while closing the program.
  3. Update the program
  4. Open
  5. Enter the information again*

*If you attend an eligible institution and do not receive a 1098-T, follow these steps to enter your information:

  1. Open to the deductions and credits section
  2. Locate the Education section
  3. Select the 1098-T
  4. Select no, did you receive
  5. Select yes, qualify for exception
  6. Enter school information
  7. Enter expenses
  8. Open MA return
  9. Continue through the screens
  10. Look for Education Expenses
  11. check the box, made college tuition payments, continue
  12. Enter the undergrad portion
  13. Enter the grad portion
  14. Continue entering information as needed
