You may be able to deduct CMA certification costs if you are self-employed or your employer requires it for your current job to maintain or improve skills

. However, if the certification is to qualify you for a new job, the costs are not deductible. Self-employed individuals can deduct costs on Schedule C under "Other Expenses," while employees must deduct these as a miscellaneous itemized deduction, subject to limitations.

where do I put my costs for continuing education units for my CMA certificate

Regular W-2 employees are no longer (since 2018) allowed to deduct job expenses, including education. If you're self employed, you can deduct the cost, as a business expense, on schedule C.

If the courses were taken at a recognized college or vocational school (educational institutions eligible to participate in the student aid programs administered by the Department of Education),  you can  take the Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC), but not the American Opportunity credit (AOC).

Federal Taxes Tab (Personal for H&B version)
