To update the $0 listed, follow these steps:

  1. Login toTurboTax.com.
  2. Click on Tax Home on the left side of the screen.
  3. If prompted, click on Continue where I left off or Take me to my return.
  4. Choose Deductions and Credits from the top of the screen.
  5. Expand the Education section.
  6. Click on Start (or Revisit).
  7. Proceed through the education section answering all of the additional questions.
  8. On the Education Summary screen at the end of the section, click Edit/Delete.
  9. Edit your entries.

Work through the dependents section under the "My Info" tab again. You *MUST* indicate the student lived with you"the whole year". Anything less, and you can't claim any education stuff for that dependent. Read the small print. It tells you that time spent away from home for the primary purpose of attending school is considered as time having lived with you. So you must select that the dependent lived with you "the whole year" in order to take any education deductions and credits.

The tuition is still $0.  It won't let me edit it, and it says I entered it earlier.  Where?

Start by going to the Education section of your return using these steps:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “education” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to education
  • Click on the blue “Jump to education” link

Then, if you are not prompted to enter your 1098-T, go through the entire education expenses section of your return until you reach the screen titled “Your Education Expenses Summary”, then follow these steps:

  • Click Edit next to the student name.
  • On the screen titled “Here’s your Education Summary”, click Edit beside Tuition.
  • Enter the information from your Form 1098-T.
