A substitute form or statement is one that is not published by the IRS. For a substitute form or statement to be
acceptable to the IRS, it must conform to the official form or the specifications outlined by the IRS.
Enter a substitute form in the same manner as you would an official IRS document. To enter a 1098 mortgage interest statement:
- Open or sign into your return, select Take me to my return
- Expand the Tax Tools menu on the left
- Click on Tools
- Choose Topic Search
- Type '1098' in the box, then select GO - see attached
- You are taken to your Mortgage Deduction Summary
- Add or Edit the lender info
- Choose 'None of these apply' on the uncommon situations question
- Enter the amounts from Box 1 (mtg. interest) and Box 5 (mtg. insurance premiums) on the next screen, see attached.
