We paid $4725 for my husbands PhD education expenses. We were reimbursed by his employer $3502 leaving us to pay $1223 out of pocket. But it shows $0 for ed expenses??

It didn't allow him to qualify for the lifetime learning credit and the tuition fees deduction.

There are income limits among other things.

For the tuition and fees deduction, it is $160,000 if married filing a joint return.

Income limits for taking the Lifetime Learning Credit for 2019 are $58,000 for single filers and $116,000 for those filing a married filing jointly return.

Please see Pub 970 for full details.
